歴史的最高傑作と言われるビッチェズ・ブリュー、その前後のイン・ア・サイレント・ウェイ、ジャック・ジョンソンなどはいくつかの録音をつなぎ合わせてそれぞれの曲を完成させたと言われているのに対し、これは1975年2月1日の大阪の昼のセッションの一発勝負の録音。ジャズのインプロビゼーションという観点から、70年代マイルスの中ではこのアルバムは特別に優れていると思う。
これより以前のダークメイガスやフィルモアイーストでのライブも傑作と言われるが、音楽の自由さ、ぶっ飛び具合が半端なく、ソニーの優れた録音スタッフの技術も手伝って大変な高音質ということもあり、このアガルタが一番だと思う。
この録音のあと、同日マイルスの体調が夕方にかけて急に悪化し、椅子に座っていたためステージ上で同じオーラをメンバーに感じさせることができず、パンゲアも同じ水準のものにならなかったのは残念だ。

理屈抜きでただただ素晴らしい。

同時期のブートも荒々しくて良いがこの音質のよさも感動もの。

JAZZという枠を超えて音楽がここまで昇華されたと思うと生きててよかったなあと思う。

ライナーのインタビューにもあるが、当時のジャズ・クリティックは電化マイルスに極めて冷淡だった。というより、台頭しつつあったフュージョンの潮流（当時はクロスオーバー・サウンド）を白眼視するあまり、マイルスの先進性を見誤った感が強い。いやむしろ、ジャズの先駆者たるマイルスに「裏切られた」思いが強かったのか。これはボブディランがフォークファンから罵倒されつつ、アコースティックとエレクトリックサウンドとの融合を果たしていった図式にも重なる。今の我々の耳には、あまりに当然で、なぜこの素晴らしいグルーヴが無視されたか、理解に苦しむ。いやむしろ、ここに展開されるインプロヴィゼーションの嵐は、今の音楽ファンにこそふさわしい「鳥肌もの」なのだ。百読は一聴にしかず。特に「ビッチェズ・ブリュー」が好き、という人には是非聴いて欲しい。絶対損はさせない。この素晴らしい音源が、我が国の大阪フェスティヴァルホールで収録されたものだということも、日本のマイルスファンは誇るべきだ。

そもそもだが、マイルスの作品群が「ツマンネ」なる批評の対象になるだろうか？ 天に向かって唾するに等しい言動に何をか言わんやと黙するばかりである。

人類の歴史が如何程続くか不明だが、文明文化の廃れない限りマイルスの作品全ては「マイルスミュージック」として不滅である。

「マイルスミュージック」を楽しもうと云う精神態度が無ければ楽しめないだろうし、そうでなければ鼻から聴く必要もなかろう。マイルスに「反対のための反対」は途方もなくナンセンスとしか云えない。マイルスと言う文字通り天空の存在者に向かって唾を吐いても己の吐いた黴菌に塗れるのみである。

そう云う輩はネット動画などのアンチの如きで、嫌なら見ずに聴かずにと不思議に常々思うのだが？ 左様にマイルス作品にも的外れなコメントなどせず無視すれば良いだけである。

さて・・・本作品、引退前までの集大成的趣のあるもので、その意味でもお聴き戴きたい作品であります。更に、コレクターやマニア諸兄におかれましては収録時間とジャケットに複数のヴァージョンがありますのでコレクションも一興かと存じます。

重ねて、これからマイルスをと云う皆様、録音技術や企画などへの評価以外の低評価は是非無視なさり、ご自分の耳でマイルスミュージックをお確かめ下さい。

丁度この録音がなされた頃、私は東京でこのグループのライブを聴きに行ってます。ほんの一瞬だけマイルスは、トランペットを下に向けたままで、マイクを通さず生でソロを吹きました‼️会場は静まり返って、この生のマイルスを固唾を飲んで聴いたのです。ただこの頃のマイルスはもう誰にも近づけない高みに達しており、ある意味マイルスも限界を感じていたかもしれない。再帰した後は、もうこのような前衛的シャッフルサウンドには挑まなかったからね。ここがちょっと残念なところです。あとマイルスに対等に張り合えるソリストが居ない事も寂しいねえ。ステージで見てたら、アルフォスター、シンバルの裏にガムテープをかなり貼ってました(⌒-⌒; ) ガムテープ貼ってもシンバルかき鳴らしているのには、ビックリでした^_^
でもマイルスが亡くなる直前のグループ、最高でした。最高のメンバーにまた巡り会えて亡くなったマイルス、ある意味幸せだったと思います。

８０年代の復帰後も含め、エレクトリック・マイルスの最高傑作は１９７５年２月１日大阪フェスティバルホールのコンサートを録音したアガルタと パンゲア の２作だと思う。ＣＤ２枚分の熱演を１日２回やるとは驚きだが、昼の部がこのアガルタだ。エレクトリック・マイルスを敬遠する人も是非アガルタとパンゲアに耳を傾ける機会を持って欲しいと思う。７０年の ライヴ・イヴル はハイテンションの混沌だったが、アガルタとパンゲアに共通するのは、形容矛盾かもしれないが、整然と進行する集団即興演奏。これほどの高みに達した音楽集団が他にどれほどいるだろうか。

メンバーはトランペット、オルガンのマイルス、サックスとフルートのソニー・フォーチュン、エレキ・ギターが２人でピート・コージーとレジー・ルーカス、ベース：マイケル・ヘンダーソン、ドラム：アル・フォスター、パーカッション：エムトゥーメの７人。キーボードなしでギター２人にしたのは正解だ。 アット・フィルモア やライヴ・イヴルのキース・ジャレットのオルガンもギターのような音を出していたのだから。ロックに接近し、それを吸収するためにはやはりエレキ・ギターが鍵。そのエレキ・ギターを使いこなして、音の数も整理して提示された７０年代エレクトリック・マイルスの究極の到達点。緩急のメリハリ、そしてエネルギーと瞑想に誘うような美しさを両方兼ね備えた稀有の作品だ。楽器の一音一音をクリアに拾った録音も素晴らしい（２００６年ＤＳＤマスタリング）。ここまで至ったマイルスが、体調のこともあってこの後引退状態になるのも納得できる。付言すると、横尾忠則氏のアート・ワークも神秘的で素晴らしい。

In case you don’t know already, Miles’ two concerts at The Festival Hall in Osaka on 1st February 1975 were released respectively as ‘Agharta’ (the afternoon performance) and ‘Pangea’ (the evening performance). All the recording was done by Sony and subsequently produced by Teo Macero.

On this Japanese tour the line-up included two electric guitarists Pete Cosey and Reggie Lucas; percussionist James Mtume Heath; young bass player Michael Henderson (who Miles had stolen from Stevie Wonder's backing band); Sonny Fortune on sax & flute, and drummer Al Foster.

‘Agharta’ is the culmination of Miles’ electronic period. Here he struggled to incorporate all his experience and knowledge of European and African music into an incredibly intense funk-grounded jazz-rock groove. He had spent the past years listening intently to Jimi Hendrix, James Brown and Sly Stone, and here the foundation of the underlying sound is a loud ‘n’ dirty variant of 1970s funk. But at the same time it’s so much more: Miles, Cosey and Fortune in particular are musicians of the highest calibre and trade frenzied, masterful solos – often through wah-pedals – over the searing, relentless funk groove laid down by the rhythm section. As ever, Miles is the careful and disciplined master of ceremonies/conductor, but you don’t necessarily get this on first listening where ‘Agharta’ can sound to the unsophisticated ear like an unstructured mess. Miles’ instruction to the listener on the original sleeve notes was to play the music very loud, and it’s true that when this instruction is followed and you become immersed in the sound, you ‘get’ the music on a much higher and more intense level and it all starts to make sense.

Don’t even consider buying anything except the exemplary Japanese remaster: it’s miles better than the dull and unremarkable release from Columbia. Every instrument in the mix is clear and vital, and the murkiness of the Columbia release is replaced by an energizing vitality of sound; in fact, the kind of sound quality normally found on a studio recording.

Following this tour of Japan Miles retired from public life for five years, to recover from some debilitating illnesses (recurrent pneumonia and a persistently dislocated hip among them).

Most Davis fans don’t rate his 1980s output as highly. Though prolific and always interesting, music from his last period somehow never recaptured the epic scale and vitality of 1975: ‘Agharta’ and ‘Pangea’ showcase Miles at the peak of his mould-breaking brilliance.

This is a blue-spec CD, the first I've owned. As promised, and contrary to what some reviews claim, it plays without problems on regular cd players. I've bumped it in the car and at home on an old DVD player (not blue-ray) going through a DAC. I doubt the blue-spec technology contributes anything special sound-wise, but if you can find a copy at a decent price, it's well worth getting for other reasons.

Agharta is the purest expression of Miles Davis's '70s voodoo funk. The other live double albums of this period, Dark Magus ('74) and Pangaea (recorded on the same day as Agharta in early '75) are also killer, but for sheer unstoppable filthy funkiness, this is the one.

It's my understanding that Sony Japan owns and hoards the master tapes to Agharta and Pangaea, which were originally only released there as LPs. At least two versions have been issued there in the last 15 years or so. Not only remastered but remixed, they are substantially different from and superior to the first CDs to come out, the Columbia "Contemporary Masters" editions of 1990.

To make things more complicated and frustrating, there was an edition several years ago which added several minutes of the performance which were cut from the original LP (which all other CD editions follow). Most of this is just musical drift at the end of show, long after Miles himself had left the stage and no doubt found himself 'nads deep in geisha or whatever he did to cure his numerous maladies of the time. But it is curious that this stuff is cut again in the newer remaster we have here (ie, it’s the same length as the original LPs). That said, the added material didn’t contribute much to the music’s effect. Moreover, to my ears, this blue-spec cd, which I believe follows an edition of 2009, is the best sounding. The mix is very clear and satisfying. Michael Henderson's bass is meaner, more defined, and you can really distinguish the two guitarists' playing. If you've only heard the US version, you'll be amazed.

Bottom line: For Played in Japan, opt for "Made in Japan," especially if you like this music and have only heard the old CDs. Not being able to read the liner notes is a small price to pay for the big improvement in sound.

reviewing Agharta Blu Spec 2 - SICP-30272-4 - This is third different version I've bought on CD, over the years, and this is the best! The 2-CD jewel case was damaged in shipping (an inadequate, soft envelope was used for shipping) so I'm replacing the jewel case. But the discs are fine, and they sound great !!!!! Better than the other CD versions I have of Agharta !!

I'm not going to review the music, go to the reviews of the US release in the unlikely event you're reading this and have never thrilled to what I regard as one of the most exciting recordings ever made. But it's tough to lay out that much cash, especially if you already own the CDs or LPs. At first, I was a little disappointed; the sound didn't bowl me over with improvement.

I must have played my Agharta LPs hundreds of times since they came out. I thought I knew every inch of the territory, but the mastering is revealing inner detail I never noticed before. The trumpet and sax tones are richer. Henderson's bass revealed in full glory at last! The more I listen, the more I hear the difference. I'd go back and A/B compare with my LPs for the review, but I don't want to! I want The Kind!

Do the math. It isn't how much it costs. You need to divide that number by the number of times you listen (enthralled). A 40 dollar pair of CD's listened to 100 times is a far better bargain than a single ten dollar CD you listen to 20 times.
